The Beagle library was also a rich visual gallery of illustrations and maps. Many of the works were beautifully illustrated with woodcuts or engravings of animals or scenes of exotic lands. The online Beagle library now allows anyone to see the amazing range of images that Darwin poured over during the voyage of the Beagle.

GETTING TO THE ROOT OF THINGS: Charles Darwin drew this famous tree on page 36 in his Notebook B (1837-38) to illustrate his ideas about the relationship between living (branches with perpendicular tips) and extinct (branches with no tip) organisms that descended from a common ancestor (circled 1 at base of tree).

Despite the age of the “Origin of Species,” much of what we know about speciation, from frogs to finches to all manner of beetles, has been learned recently. Populations of the Amazonian frog, above, are diverging because of female preferences for different mating calls.

10 things I’d tell Darwin

Three quarter length portrait of sixty year old man, balding, with white hair and long white bushy beard, with heavy eyebrows shading his eyes looking thoughtfully into the distance, wearing a wide lapelled jacket.Nick Lane, author of Life Ascending:
The Ten Great Inventions of Evolution,

The Times 27/5/09

When Matt Ridley read Nick Lane’s new book he said “If Charles Darwin sprang from his grave, I would give him this fine book to bring him up to speed.” We asked Nick to write a quick 10-point primer for the father of evolution about our current understanding of the science of life.

"Darwin knew everything and nothing about evolution. Everything, because nobody grasped the priciples of natural selection better than he. Nothing, because almost all of today’s proofs of his theory are written in the languages of genes and molecules that he knew nothing about.

Darwin would be amazed and delighted by the scope and details of our current understanding of life.
In Life Ascending: The Ten Great Inventions of Evolution I take life’s most celebrated ‘inventions’, each one of which transfigured our planet, and trace what we know of how they came to be"

Ed Balls received a letter this week from 26 of the country’s leading scientists – including Richard Dawkins, Harry Kroto, John Sulston – warning of their concerns that the proposed new primary school science curriculum does not even mention evolution.
