The Star of Bethlehem has potential astronomical underpinning

C Michael Hogan

The astronomy of Christmas is chiefly centered around verifiable celestial events that occurred at or near the time of birth of Jesus. Astromers have expended considerable research on reconstructing movements of planets, stars and comets that could best explain Biblical accounts of the era.

By CURTIS BRAINARD, The New York Times, FEB. 10, 2014

Four years ago, Anna Frebel, a young astronomer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, found an ancient star in a neighboring galaxy whose chemical composition proved nearly identical to some unusual stars on the outskirts of our own galaxy, which are older than the Milky Way itself.

Galileo’s Moon Drawings, the First Realistic Depictions of the Moon in History (1609-1610)

in Astronomy, Science | January 30th, 2014 2 Comments

But Galileo was a very early adopter, and improver, of the instrument. In 1609, he made the drawings above “from life,” the very first realistic renderings of the Moon (now housed at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Florence).
